What is geomembrane?

Geomembranes are impermeable membranes used in conjunction with rocks or earth to block fluid migration in man-made structures. These membranes are usually made of synthetic polymers in sheets ranging from 0.25 to 3.5 mm thick. Geomembranes are made of various materials such as EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), and Polypropylene (PP).  Due to their ability to block fluids, they can help to prevent the dispersal of contaminants, and may be used with soil liners or permeable geotextiles to create a composite lining system that provides added security. Titan uses geomembranes in an effort to minimize the effect of human development activities on the environment.  They are especially important for waste containment. Our products are manufactured from highly durable materials, often with an expected lifetime of hundreds of years. They are resistant to chemicals and to wear, so that the passage of time and corrosion do not affect the integrity of the lining. Each type of geomembrane material has specific characteristics which affect installation procedures, lifespan and performance. How to construction?

The fundamental mechanism of seaming polymeric geomembrane sheets together is to temporarily reorganize the polymer structure (by melting or softening) of the two opposing surfaces to be joined in a controlled manner that, after the application of pressure, results in the two sheets being bonded together. This reorganization results from an input of energy that originates from either thermal or chemical processes. These processes may involve the addition of additional polymer in the area to be bonded.
Ideally, seaming two geomembrane sheets should result in no net loss of tensile strength across the two sheets, and the joined sheets should perform as one single geomembrane sheet. However, due to stress concentrations resulting from the seam geometry, current seaming techniques may result in minor tensile strength and/or elongation loss relative to the parent sheet. The characteristics of the seamed area are a function of the type of geomembrane and the seaming technique used.
