Differences Between Versions
Specification:
For the specification of each version, see VA4 Specifications.
Substitution Relationship
Original Board | Substitute Board | Substitution Rules |
TN12VA4 | TN13VA4 | The TN13VA4 board can be created as 12VA4 on the NMS to substitute for the TN12VA4 board, without any software upgrade. After the substitution, the TN13VA4 board functions as a TN12VA4 board. NOTE: When a system control board is installed in slot IU2 of the 9800 Universal Platform Subrack subrack, the TN13VA4 board cannot be installed in slot IU1. Therefore, if a TN12VA4 board is installed in slot IU1 and a system control board is installed in slot IU2 of the 9800 Universal Platform Subrack subrack, the TN13VA4 board cannot substitute for the TN12VA4 board. |

Update Description
This section describes the hardware updates in V100R001C01 and later versions as well as the reasons for the updates. Any product versions that are not listed in the document means that they have no hardware updates.
Hardware Updates in V100R001C20SPC360
Hardware Update | Reason for the Update |
Added the TN13VA4 board. | The TN13VA4 board is manufactured using an optimized engineering process. The functions of the TN13VA4 and TN12VA4 boards are the same. |
Hardware Updates in V100R001C01
Hardware Update | Reason for the Update |
Added the TN12VA4 board. | The TN12VA4 board must be used to adjust the optical power of four channels of signals. |
Application
As a variable optical attenuator unit, the VA4 board adjusts power for four optical signals.
Figure 1 illustrates the position of the VA4 board in a WDM system.
Functions and Features
The VA4 board adjusts power for up to four signals and provides power-off protection.
Table 1 describes the functions and features of the VA4 board.
Table 1 Functions and features of the VA4 board
Function and Feature | Description |
Basic function | Queries its preconfigured attenuation and adjust the power for up to four optical signals according to the control commands sent by the SCC board. |
Power-off protection | Provides power-off protection to avoid damage to the associated optical receiver due to the excessive optical power generated when the VA4 board is recovering from a power outage. If VA4 board undergoes a power outage, the attenuation set last time for the VA4 board is retained or the attenuation automatically switches to its maximum value. When being the maximum value, the attenuation of the VA4 board still remains at the maximum value shortly after the power supply recovers. When the system begins to work normally, the attenuation automatically switches back to the value set the last time. |
Attenuation range | The variable attenuation range is between 1.5 dB and 21.5 dB. The attenuation is adjusted in increments of 0.1 dB. NOTE: The maximum inherent insertion loss of the VA4 board is 1.5 dB. |
Working Principle and Signal Flow
The VA4 board consists of four variable optical attenuators, a driver and control module, a control and communication module, and a power supply module.
Figure 1 shows the functional modules and signal flow of the VA4 board.
Figure 1 Functional modules and signal flow of the VA4 board
Signal Flow
According to the instructions from the SCC board, the VA4 board adjusts the power of four channels of optical signals by using a variable optical attenuator.
Module Functions
Variable optical attenuators
Adjust the power of the four received optical signals.
Driver and control module
Detects the power of the incoming and outgoing signals of the VA4 board.
Provides a drive signal and control signal to each variable optical attenuator, and reports the detected attenuation to the control and communication module.
Control and communication module
Controls board operations.
Controls the operations on each module of the board according to CPU instructions.
Collects information about alarms, performance events, working states, and voltages from functional modules on the board.
Communicates with the SCC board.
Power supply module
Converts the DC power supplied from the backplane into appropriate power required by each module on the board.
Front Panel
There are indicators, interfaces, and a laser hazard level label on the front panel of the VA4 board.
Appearance of the Front Panel
Figure 1 shows the front panel of the VA4 board.
Figure 1 Front panel of the VA4 board
Indicators
Four indicators are present on the front panel:
Board hardware status indicator (STAT) - triple-colored (red, green, yellow)
Service active status indicator (ACT) - dual-colored (red, green)
Board software status indicator (PROG) - dual-colored (red, green)
Service alarm indicator (SRV) - triple-colored (red, green, yellow)
For details about these indicators, see Board Indicators.
Interfaces
Table 1 describes each interface on the VA4 board.
Table 1 Interfaces on the VA4 board
Interface | Connector | Function |
IN1-IN4 | LC | Receive four optical signals for power adjustment. |
OUT1-OUT4 | LC | Output four power-adjusted optical signals. |
Laser Hazard Level
The laser hazard level of the board is HAZARD LEVEL 1M, indicating that the maximum power launched by the board ranges from 10 dBm (10 mW) to 21.3 dBm (136 mW).
Valid Slots
The VA4 board is a single-width board (requiring one slot).
Table 1 lists the valid slots for the VA4 board.
Table 1 Valid slots for TN12VA4/TN13VA4 board
Product | Valid Slots |
OptiX OSN 9800 universal platform subrack | IU1-IU16 |
NOTE:
When a system control board is installed in slot IU2 of the OptiX OSN 9800 universal platform subrack subrack, the TN13VA4 board cannot be installed in slot IU1.
Characteristic Code for the VA4
The characteristic code for the VA4 board contains three digits, indicating the maximum attenuation of the optical signals processed by the board.
Detailed information about the characteristic code is given in Table 1.
Table 1 Characteristic code for the VA4 board
Code | Meaning | Description |
Digits one to three | Attenuation value | Indicate the maximum attenuation. |
For example, the characteristic code for the VA4 board is 21.5, indicating that the board allows for a maximum attenuation of 21.5 dB.
