Introduction
What is an Esd mat?
The word “anti static mat” is typically used to refer a two-ply (meaning two-layer) rubber mat that has a top blue, gray, or green layer that is “static dissipative” and a bottom black layer that is “conductive”. These mats are normally used for soldering, covering table tops, tray liner, or as “floor runner” carpeting. On the top static dissipative part of the mat static is drained at an “anti static rate”. On the bottom conductive part of the mat you would want to have a connection to ground.
What is a Conductive mat?
Conductive mats are black because they are infused with carbon. Carbon is conductive, and it is the active material in these mats that conducts static electricity to ground. They are always used on floors, and never on table tops. Conductive mats sold on are also “anti fatigue”, meaning they are beveled and diamond-plated for standing comfort.
To ground the conductive mats use a Mat Ground (which can be plugged into the snap pre-installed on the corner of the mat).Applications
