1. Application & Benefits

'YKSM' directly provides constant stream of solar energy to devices that require power. 'YKSM' comes in a variety of standard sizes, allowing customization of design and power-output by connecting the modules in series, in parallel or both. The smallest 'YKSM' starts from 3 x 2mm (0.5V, 2mA).

Thus, 'YKSM' is ideal for both industrial appliances and consumer goods.

'YKSM' can be used in off-the-grid regions. Using 'YKSM' would not require building of a massive power system infrastructure. Power can be easily supplied without electrical power grids, when 'YKSM' is used. Plus, wireless sensors, portable industrial and emergency backup batteries can be charged with 'YKSM'.

As wires can be replaced by 'YKSM', it bring variety of options for its usage. Devices that is hard to get connected to the power generator with a wire can be charged simply by 'YKSM'. YOLK’s product line of solar modules 'YKSM' is high efficiency mono-crystalline solar modules in a surface mount package.
YKSM's efficiency is typically measured above 22-23.7% at a wafer level. Its high efficiency and superior feature contribute to the extension of the runtime in a small footprint even in low-light conditions in addition to increasing battery life. The 22-23.7% power conversion efficiency means the 22-23.7% of the light energy is converted into electrical energy. They are extremely useful in applications requiring solar-powered generation in a limited space.

2. PCB Layout Recommendation

The PCB layout should be equivalent to the layout of the above 'YKSM' layout. For 'YKSM 20-8-5-5', contact pad size is ( 1.5 x 7.5 )mm. The longer side of the contact pad is 0.5 millimeters shorter than that of the module, that is, 0.25 millimeters space between the module and each end of the contact pad. The spacing between the two contact pads is 17 millimeters apart.

3.Monocrystalline

'YKSM' has a wide spectral sensitivity, 300 to 1100nm that receives a wide gamut of wavelengths, meaning it can also be used in low-light conditions. This makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Therefore, 'YKSM' is ideal with direct sunlight, but is also good with indirect sunlight or artificial light. However, as the output power of a solar modules is proportional (over a wide range) to the incoming light energy, irradiance and spectrum are generally much higher and broader outdoors, and is generally lower and narrower from indirect and artificial light. For example, with an average office space lighting (incandescent or halogen light bulbs), the power output can be 100 times less than bright sunlight, and with fluorescent lighting, 200 to 500 times less.


The values in the data sheet are measured at "standard condition" of 1 Sun, which is equal to 1000W per square meter sunlight irradiance at a defined light spectrum (air mass of 1.5) and 25°C module temperature.

4. Moisture Sensitivity, Reflow Soldering and Washing Information

YOLK has identified the moisture reflow sensibility of the 'YKSM'.

During the solder reflow process, the whole body of the solar module is exposed to high process temperatures and moisture uptake, the combination of which could result in moisture-induced delamination and cracking of the module. To prevent these, handle the module in accordance with IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020 standard per the labeled moisture sensitivity level (MSL), level 1. YOLK does not recommend using chlorinated solvents.

As mentioned, 'YKSM' is made of mono-crystalline, high-efficiency solar cells in a surface mount package, and these robust cells can be used in harsh environments. During reflow soldering for surface mounting, we recommend using low temperature solder paste like lead-free Sn-42 / Bi-58 composite paste. For instance, we recommend the TAMURA KAKEN CORPORATION’s lead-free solder paste TLF-401-11, where it recommends 220°C peak temperatures at the reflow zone above 175°C for about 50 seconds.

RELATIVE LIGHTING POWER DENSITY

The values in the chart shows relative power density for various lighting conditions in units of Watts per square meter (W/㎡), which are measured as standard condition of 1 Sun. The reference standard condition is 1 Sun. 1 Sun is equal to 1000 Watts per square meter of sunlight irradiance at a constant 25°C module temperature and at 1.5 Air Mass (Air Mass helps characterize the solar spectrum after solar radiation has traveled through the atmospheres. 1.5 Air Mass is almost universal when characterizing terrestrial power-generating panels).

The chart demonstrates how typically the power density and the irradiance of indoor lighting is significantly lower than that of sunlight. The spectrum is also narrower from indirect and artificial light. As a result, the power output from bright sunlight may be about 100 times greater than that of typical office lighting, which are incandescent or halogen light bulbs, and 200 to 500 times greater than that of fluorescent lighting.
