1909 was the year when Motwane’s started the business in India by establishing Eastern Electric and Trading Co. That is the time when Mobile Power Plants were setup by the company for social and commercial functions for the people.
In 1919 the Motwane’s got established in Bombay to establish the business of telephones and installation of telephones by establishing a company Chicago Telephone Supply Co.

In 1928 business lines for Heavy Electrical and Mechanical Engineering were added. As the business grew both the companies were amalgamated under MOTWANE brand name.

MOTWANE then setup 5 divisions Electronics Communication Division, Heavy Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Division , Industrial Plants Division , Chicago Radio Division and Instruments Division. 

The Electronics Communication Division specialised in VHF, Two Way , Multichannel communication systems, Microwave Radio for defence and Posts and Telegraphs. It also specialised in Instrument Landing Systems for International Airports. It partnered with well known companies like Westinghouse, Andrews, Wilcox and Motorola. 

The Heavy Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Division was supplying and installing Heavy equipments like AC DC Generators, T&D Equipment kike HT Transformers and Switchgears. Some Early customers were Chambal Hydel, Bombay Muncipal Corporation (Lovegrrove Pumping Station Worli). 

The Industrial Plants Division used to supply erect and commission the entire plants for Cement , Refractories, Fertilizers, Oil and natural Gas, Chemical plants and Mining. Some of the major customers were Neyveli Lignite, Dalmia Cement, Damodar Valley, TISCO, ACC Ltd., Bombay Port Trust, Hindustan Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. This division also supplied over 25 Locomotives to Indian Railways. 

The Chicago Radio Division was the most popular where most of the National leaders like Mahatma Gandhi , Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel. The most popular setup was made in 1959 when Mr. Eisenhover the then president of USA addressed a assemblage of two million. Motwane then had a system of simultaneous translation which would enable people of India to understand the speeches of British officials in local language.

The Instrument Division setup in 1967 which is now THE MOTWANE MFG CO PVT Ltd. was the first manufacturing company in India to provide Test Instruments to Power , Nuclear, Aviation, Defence, Industries and Communication Sectors. This division was also in technical collaboration with AVO Ltd. UK for manufacture of the world famous Multimeter the 8X MK-III. Since then Motwane has been endeavouring to acquire leadership in design , manufacture and supply of Electrical and Electronic Test and Measurement Equipments for Power Sector. It is known for its research and knowledge capabilities in Electrical Metrology. 

Upto 2006 the company was a family owned business. Now it is a wholly owned subsidiary of a listed company with Bombay Stock Exchange with a new Visionary Management , Broad Capital base and a strong intention to leverage MOTWANE’s highly valued Brand. Since 2006 the company has seen a constant growth averaging to almost 60% year-on-year and further growing.
