Japanese traditional Masu custom cups with Flavor of Hinoki for wedding gift
Made with high quality Japanese cypress.
Prepared with elaborate care by experienced craftsmen.
Making possible a truly unique masu (wooden sake cup), the only one of its kind in the world.
A standard 1 go sake masu (wooden sake cup).
Japanese masus have a history of about 1300 years,
and at first were used for measuring foodstuffs like rice or fish or sake.
Now, as then, they are used in the same way.
The word "masu" was thought to link to the phonetically identical words for "increase" or
"benefit," and so the wooden masus were cemented with the image of being associated with
happy occasions, and used in activities such as filling them with offerings made with
the hope of a good harvest, or with beans for the Shinto ritual of Setsubun,
the beginning of spring. In recent years, these wooden masus are used for good luck,
for toasts or seating arrangements at wedding receptions, wedding gifts for the guests,
or 60th birthday celebrations.
They have also proven to be popular among young people,
earning such great praise like "a high level of originality," and "very Japanese."
