@. In this ingenious G.W. Schleidt design, inspired by 17th century physicist Isaac Newton, the sand timer is suspended in a clear liquid within a glass cylinder. When the apparatus is inverted, the sand slowly trickles downward within the sand timer, while the timer itself slowly floats upward in the liquid.
1. It has two connected vertical glass bulbs allowing a regulated trickle of material from the top to the bottom.Once the top bulb is empty, it can be inverted to being timing again.
2. Factors affecting the time include the amount of sand, the bulb size, the neck width, and the sand quality.
3. It is used when an approximate measure suffices, as in egg timers for cooking or for board games.
